■  End Grain:  What's so special about an "End Grain" cutting board?  Most cutting boards on the market are “edge-grain” cutting boards.  After repeated use, the knife cuts through the surface of the wood, leaving tiny wood splinters that can come loose and actually get into your food.  Additionally, because the edge-grain of the wood is the hardest part of the wood, it causes significant wear on your knives.  If you look closely at this cutting board, you can see that the outside edges of the board are “edge-grain” and the top and bottom surfaces are “end-grain”.  Your end-grain cutting board will be easier on your knives and show less wear over time.  The surface is sometimes referred to as "self-healing", especially when finished with mineral oils as we have done.

■  Personal:  The board can be personalized on either side with a custom-engraved Family name and Year with the font of your choice.

■  Process:  My process begins with the jointer, planer, and table saw to ensure all of the hardwood boards are flat and straight.  After that, the boards are milled into various widths and glued back together alternating the walnut and maple pieces.  Once the glue dries, the assembled board is then planed and flattened once again.  Then, for the second time, the board is milled into strips and then glued back together again to get to the checkerboard-type pattern.  Finally, the board is drum sanded to ensure perfect flatness before the "juice grooves" and handles are routed (see attached photos).  And, finally, this cutting board was finished with multiple coats of mineral oil and final coats of beeswax and canuba wax, all food-safe products.
